Structure of the Earth:
Understand how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formed.
Recognize that fossils provide evidence of the plants and animals that lived long ago and the nature of the environment at that time.
Describe the structure of the Earth.
Describe the characteristics of each layer of the Earth.
Structure of the Earth (answers):
Igneous: Formed from molten rocks.
Sedimentary: Made up of sediments of rocks weathered from a pre-existing rock or mineral.
Metamorphic: If Igneous and Sedimentary rocks are under intense heat and pressure, they turn into Metamorphic rocks.
Fossils are the remains of the animals that lived long ago.
The Earth consists of a crust, a mantle and a core.
Crust: Most top layer of the Earth. About 50km thick.
Mantle: Consists of molten rocks that are melted by the core's heat.
Core: Very hot, consists of solid iron and nickel.
